Smith College Builds Ford Engineering Center

Published 2/14/2007

Smith College is initiating construction on Ford Hall, a new science and engineering center designed by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. RFD (Research Facilities Design) is providing laboratory design consulting services. The facility will house the Picker Engineering Program and programs in biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, and molecular biology. Ford Hall will be constructed with sustainable design features including photovoltaic cells for heating, cooling, and ventilation; high efficiency LED light fixtures; occupancy sensors to monitor light, air, and moisture; use of recycled materials; and passive energy options such as daylighting and insulation. Ford Hall is part of a planned $73-million, 140,000-sf facility at the site that will include additional buildings in the future.
