Saint Louis University Dedicates Doisy Research Center

Published 12/6/2007

Saint Louis University dedicated the $82 million Edward A. Doisy Research Center in St. Louis, Mo., on December 7, 2007. Designed by Cannon Design, the 206,000-sf, 10-story glass and steel tower is the centerpiece of the University’s multi-million dollar program to accelerate its steady growth in funded basic medical science research and clinical translational research. The state-of-the-art facility features many open labs to foster exploration, research, and communication of information and ideas among the next generation of medical leaders. The tower’s two lowest levels extend toward and connect via a covered walkway to Saint Louis University School of Medicine, where additional research and training space are located. Laboratory and office spaces line the building’s perimeter to maximize views and introduce natural lighting. Laboratory spaces on the south and east sides are modular and flexible; offices grouped along the north facilitate interaction among researchers. The building envelope tapers to a point on the west, creating a connecting stair and collaboration spaces. Core space is devoted to shared and specialized lab and support functions, including a BSL-3 lab suite. The facility will accommodate research on cancer, liver disease, heart/lung disease, aging and brain disease, and vaccine development. General contractor Clayco Construction began building the facility in 2005. LEED Silver certification is being sought for the project.
