Boca Raton, Fla.
Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is planning to construct the $400 million Charles E. Schmidt Medical Center on 38 acres of its Boca Raton campus. The new academic medical center will be created as a partnership between FAU, the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and Boca Raton Community Hospital. Slated for occupancy in 2012, the 1.2 million-sf hospital will be a model of healthcare safety with design features that will improve visibility of patients to staff, reduce physician fatigue, and standardize and automate many protocols and procedures. The 530-room facility is being designed by HKS Architects of Dallas with Robins & Morton of Boca Raton as general contractor. Groundbreaking is scheduled for October of 2007.
