The state of Florida now has designs for a prototype science buildling, thanks to a joint effort by Palm Beach Community College (PBCC) and three other colleges. The design is expected to save millions of dollars in architectural fees. PBCC will implement the design in its plans for a new 81,000-sf BioScience Technology Complex, which broke ground in April 2006.
The $15-million project will include two buildings: one houses classrooms and core-science labs (biology, microbiology, anatomy and physiology, physics, and chemistry). The other provides classrooms and labs for biotechnology, environmental science and environmental horticulture, plus a wellness center. (The PBCC biotechnology wing is not part of the prototype design.) A Multimedia lecture hall and courtyard will connect the two buildings.
The PBCC campus at Lake Worth will also use the prototype design when it breaks ground on a 50,000-sf science building in May.
