Children's Hospital at Fitzsimons Develops Aurora Campus

Published 2/28/2006

The Children's Hospital at Fitzsimons is developing a new "child-friendly" facility at its $360-million Aurora, Colo., campus. The 1.02-million-sf building will include significant outdoor green space with children's play areas, child-sized countertops in the reception areas and a kids-only area with Internet access, activities, games, and entertainment equipment. The new hospital will focus on family comfort as well, providing private patient rooms with family sleeping accommodations, family storage, private baths, data ports, and desks.

The project also includes a 250,000-sf office building and two parking garages on the 42-acre greenfield site. Most notable about the new facility is the speed at which it is being constructed by project contractor McCarthy. Started in April 2004, the project topped out one year later, and construction will be substantially complete by late summer 2007 for projected patient occupancy in fall 2007. The facility was designed by H+L Architecture of Denver and Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership of Portland. The joint venture partner is Gerald H. Phipps Inc. of Denver.
