University of Florida To Build Interdisciplinary Research Facility

Published 8/14/2005

The University of Florida will initiate construction on a new multidisciplinary research facility on its Gainesville campus by late fall 2005. Slated for completion in spring 2006, the project will accommodate research for the UF Genetics Institute, the UF Shands Cancer Center, and the Interdisciplinary Center for Biotechnology Research. The six-story, 350,000-sf building will house research laboratories, animal research facilities, faculty and administrative offices, and a rooftop greenhouse.

The interior will accommodate forty large labs with conventional benches that are dividable into smaller modules, lab support rooms, and wide working hallways. There will be additional labs for bioinformatics, mircroarrays, and transgenic research. The building will also include the C.A. Pound Laboratory, the Maples Center for Forensic Medicine, a 200-seat auditorium, and a secured SPF (specific pathogen free) vivarium. The project team includes Ellenzweig Associates of Boston as design architect and lab planner and Hunton Brady Architects of Orlando as architect of record.
