Floyd Memorial Hospital Plans New Albany Expansion

Published 4/15/2003

Floyd Memorial Hospital is planning a $50-million expansion of its New Albany, Ind., facility. The 250,00-sf expansion will enhance the hospital's ability to care for cardiac patients and expand other services. Features of the expansion include:

  • A 32-bed ICU/CVU, replacing the existing 11-bed ICU
  • An emergency center with an 8-room fast track area to handle minor emergencies, 24 treatment rooms, a six-room critical decision unit, and two trauma rooms
  • A 32-bed TCU/PCU area with monitored beds
  • Four new operating rooms, two of which are designated for open heart surgery
  • A dedicated women's center with imaging services, including mammography
  • Conversion of all semi-private rooms to private rooms

The 25,000-sf heart center will house non-invasive cardiology, two or three cardiac catheterization labs, expansion of cardiac rehab, two cardiac operating rooms, and invasive cardiology services, such as angioplasty and open heart surgery. To be constructed over part of the existing parking lot, the expansion will increase the hospital's footprint by 20 to 25 percent.

Upon completion, the emergency room services and ICU will be moved from the existing 435,000-sf hospital to the addition. The ER space will then be converted to an inpatient and outpatient physical therapy unit. The ICU will become an 11-bed observational unit.

Laughlin Millea Hillman Architecture of New Albany and Artekna of Indianapolis are the project architects. The construction manager is Whittenberg Construction.
