UC San Diego Expands Biomedical Library

Published 12/8/2003

The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) has awarded McCarthy a $13.3 million contract to add 39,600-sf to the existing biomedical library and to renovate the attached biomedical library structure on the La Jolla campus. General contractor McCarthy will construct the library addition while the existing library remains operational. Upon completion of the addition, the new library area will open while the existing building will be vacated and renovated, with an end result of one contiguous 74,690-sf facility. Scheduled to begin construction in April 2004, the three-level library addition will house a 24-hour computer reading room; high density movable shelving; specialized research; “touchdown stations” for semi-private study; group study/consultation rooms; networked computer stations; and training facilities. The project architect is Hardy, Holzman, Pfeiffer & Associates of Los Angeles. Completion is expected in 2006.
