Carolinas HealthCare System Expands Charlotte Medical Center

Published 1/14/2003

Carolinas HealthCare System is planning a $70-million expansion of Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, the system's flagship hospital. The project will add four floors to the top of the existing surgery tower and will include major expansion of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit, the Trauma Intensive Care Unit, and the Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit.

The design features access to new technologies and services directly at the patients' bedside. New family lounges, waiting rooms, and private family conference areas will be located on each floor. No new licensed beds will be added; units and beds from other hospital areas will be relocated to the new facilities. Construction on the project, slated to begin in 2003 with completion in early 2006, will include new elevators and a ground floor connection to the lobby of the Dickinson Tower at Carolinas Medical.
