The University of Michigan Medical School is building the new $220-million, 472,000-gsf Biomedical Science Research Building on its Ann Arbor campus. Containing 240 lab modules, each accommodating up to four researchers, the facility is designed to promote group interaction. Project features include an animal research facility, two levels below grade, and a 300-seat auditorium. The research facility is part of the University’s Life Sciences Institute development, which will include a six-floor, 235,000-gsf life science education and research building with a mechanical penthouse.
The Life Sciences Institute facility will house wet research labs, core laboratory areas, lab support, offices for principal investigators and administration, a small library, a combined gallery/lobby space, interaction areas, and a 1,100-space parking deck. Designed by Polshek Partnership, the facility began construction in October 2001 with completion expected at the end of 2005. The construction team for the project includes Gilbane Building Company and Clark Construction Company.
