NCSU Develops College of Engineering

Published 8/1/2002

North Carolina State University has begun site work for the new College of Engineering on its Centennial Campus. Consolidating classrooms scattered in several buildings on the main campus, the facility will house Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Engineering with laboratories, offices, and some shared classroom space. The first $43-million, 152,000-sf phase is slated for completion in June 2004. The second, $45-million phase, encompassing 175,000-sf, is expected to reach completion by June 2005. The project is designed by Perkins & Will.

Daniels Hall, the College of Engineering's former location, will also undergo a comprehensive renovation. Of 119,000 sf, 40,000-sf will be renovated, converting outdated laboratory and teaching facilities into classrooms, teaching labs, research labs, and offices for the Industrial Engineering department, as well as providing space for undergraduate Computer Science teaching labs. The mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems will also be modernized. The renovation, designed by Walter Robbs Callahan & Pierce, will progress in two phases with the building partially occupied. Phase one will relocate the Computer Science Labs to Daniels Hall by December 2004; phase two will commence when Electrical Engineering relocates to Centennial Campus.
