Genzyme Develops Green Headquarters

Published 6/6/2002

Genzyme Corp. received a $321,750 grant from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC) for its 280,000-sf "green" headquarters under construction in Cambridge. MTC, managing the state's $150-million Renewable Energy Trust, has awarded seven grants totalling $2.6 million in its first round of funding to various private, public and nonprofit groups engaged in sustainable development. Features of Genzyme's headquarters will include a 30-kilowatt photovoltaic array, a steam chiller, natural light via a 12-story prism skylit atrium, and rooftop plantings reducing run-off and outer-building heat. Genzyme's prior commitment to a sustainably designed headquarters was supported by the MTC grant; the decision to use solar panels followed on the heels of the MTC funding. The panels may provide a portion of the energy needed for lighting the facility.
