UC San Diego Breaks Ground on Moores Cancer Center

Published 12/5/2002

The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) in La Jolla has launched the construction of the new Rebecca and John Moores UCSD Cancer Center, a 270,000-sf facility that will unite the Cancer Center's clinical, research, education, and outreach activities under one roof. Completion of the building, designed by Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership of Los Angeles, is scheduled for 2004. The Cancer Center is one of only 40 in the United States to hold a National Cancer Institute designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center. The new facility will be located on the University's East Campus and will consolidate programs that are now dispersed throughout the UCSD campuses.

Fostering interaction and promoting "bench to bedside" research and application, the facility consists of two separate structures that share a common base. The distinct structures will accommodate cancer research laboratories, clinical functions, a vivarium, and office zones, while the unifying base provides programmatic interconnections between the two buildings. Patients will be able to receive all their outpatient care within one facility. The center will also provide space for education about the disease and its prevention. A Cancer Commons with outdoor gardens will offer spaces of varying size and character to support interaction among the faculty and students, while providing space for patients to wait for and during treatments.
