Columbia St. Mary's Hospital Builds New Facility

Published 11/18/2002

Columbia St. Mary's Hospital has selected Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum (HOK) as lead architect for its new Lake Drive Campus hospital in Milwaukee. The project is a consolidation of the existing St. Mary's and Columbia campuses into a single new replacement facility to be constructed on a prominent site overlooking Lake Michigan. The new medical campus will consist of 350 beds; expanded ambulatory care facilities; clinic space for more than 150 physicians; classroom and laboratory space for the Columbia College of Nursing; and structured parking to meet the requirements of the campus.

HOK's scope of work includes architecture, interior design, lighting, structural engineering and site/urban design services. HOK will work with the Columbia St. Mary's project management team to help select a local architectural firm partner. In addition, HOK will be partnering with the engineering firms of Affiliated Engineers of Madison; Ring and DuChateau Consulting Engineers; and Graef Anhalt Schloemer of Milwaukee. Smocke & Associates, also of Milwaukee, has been engaged to assist in setting up and overseeing the projects; the schematic design is scheduled to begin in October 2003. Groundbreaking is planned for spring 2004, with the hospital slated to open in 2009.

HOK will also be the lead architect for a facilities expansion project at Columbia St. Mary's Ozaukee Campus in Mequon, Wisconsin. The project will include a new medical office building, expanded parking, and a new inpatient tower tentatively planned to increase the facility to 160 beds.
