The University of California, Davis has recently completed construction of the new $57-million Robert and Margit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. Built by contractor McCarthy, the facility is one of the largest university performing arts presentation venues in the country. Begun in May 2000, the 104,000-sf facility includes: the multilevel 1,800-seat Barbara K. and W. Turrentine Jackson Hall; a glass atrium and entrance lobby with canopy; an attached Studio Theatre seating up to 250; and associated, back-of-the-house facilities for staging, lighting, and recording. An expanded education and K-12 community outreach program will also be based in the center.
Designed by BOORA Architects of Portland, Ore., the facility features the latest in performance center architecture and technology including: variable acoustics design; sophisticated multimedia technology including an integrated sound system; state-of-the-art theater lighting; and a high-volume, low velocity, quiet design HVAC system with vibration isolation throughout.
