Siena College's Morrell Science Center recently won a First Place Technology Award in the category of Institutional Buildings in a regional competition organized by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). Located in Loudonville, New York, the new 53,000-sf center houses a total of 46 teaching laboratories for physics, biology and chemistry, as well as offices, recitation and faculty rooms. Cannon Design served as architect and engineer of the $10.8-million project, designing HVAC systems that successfully integrate variable airflow lab systems with heat recovery into the architectural design. The DDC control technology which interfaces directly with the College's central campus operator's workstation, is based upon straightforward systems design and nonproprietary equipment to control such factors as fume hood face velocity, room pressure and temperature within each laboratory space, creating effective, energy-efficient and comfortable lab environments.
