Published 8/27/2001

Arizona State Civil and Behavioral Health Hospital has selected McCarthy Building Companies Inc. to lead the design-build team for its $34.5 million hospital and adolescent behavioral facility in Phoenix. With design development underway, the project is scheduled to break ground in August with completion targeted for fall 2002. The 200,000-sf juvenile complex will be finished first. Centered around a social rehabilitation pedestrian mall designed to create a neighborhood character, the facility will offer several retail outlets including a bank, coffee shop, barbershop, clothing store and post office. Three one-story structures will house support facilities including: clinical administration offices; a specialty medical clinic; rehabilitation therapy facility; a library; 120-seat auditorium; gymnasium; and fitness center with a swimming pool. Three separate patient treatment units with a total of 200 beds are accompanied by an additional separate adolescent facility housing 20 beds. Joining McCarthy on the design/build team are architectural firms Gould Evans Associates of Phoenix, and Cannon & Associates Consulting Engineers of Los Angeles.
